Analyses and Visualizations

What are the most frequent words used by António Ramos Rosa in his poetry? How do they appear in the author’s different books? What does this repeated use tell us? Is it possible to find patterns? What do they reveal?

To answer these and other questions, the Tree and Forest project team has developed a set of computational text analyses that we now present in the form of information visualizations. [Release 1, June 2024]

The corpus analyzed includes the books published by Ramos Rosa between Viagem através duma Nebulosa (1960) and Numa Folha, Leve e Livre (2013). We follow the version collected in the three volumes of Obra Poética prepared by Luis Manuel Gaspar for Assírio & Alvim (vol. 1, 2018; vol. 2, 2020; vol. 3, in press). We would like to thank the editor and Maria Filipe Ramos Rosa for their permission and generosity in allowing us to work with the stabilized version of the author’s poetic work.

The analyses were carried out in R language in the RStudio environment and the visualizations were produced using RAWGraphs. In addition to using open source and non-proprietary tools, we also followed open science practices in making the data and scripts available. The data (csv) is provided along each visualization and also in the Zenodo repository. The annotated R code is available here and also in Zenodo.
